Questa pagina web del sito è dedicata alla scoperta dei grandi pipers del passato e del presente.

La scelta di condensare qui alcuni nomi di spicco del piping mondiale significa la volontà di trarre ispirazione da chi rappresenta l'eccellenza. E ognuno di noi dovrebbe tendere sempre all'eccellenza, poichè solo la volontà di migliorare e raggiungere il massimo dei propri limiti è lo scopo dell'intelletto umano.

Io sono convinto che lo studio di qualsiasi strumento musicale sia la ricerca di una propria soddisfazione interiore, il cibo spirituale che ci permette di elevarci al di sopra della mediocrità; chi ama sinceramente la musica non potrà mai essere una persona negletta o malvagia, al pari di chi ama la natura, gli animali e la purezza dei bambini.

Pietro Malaguti

John D. Burgess
(1934 - 2005)

Non ho mai incontrato purtroppo di persona John D. Burgess. Mi parlò di lui il grande Angus MacDonald, che ebbi l'onore di incontrare personalmente alla Glazier Hall di Londra, durante il Bratach Gorm del 1984, la più importante gara di piping dell'area metropolitana londinese. Angus, con la semplicità di tutti i veri grandi artisti, mi disse semplicemente che John D. era il suo punto di arrivo. Stava parlando uno dei miti del XX secolo, di un altro mito grande quanto lui.
L'amico e maestro Roddy MacDonald, ricorda quando John D., ospite a casa sua a Londra, chiese alla moglie di Roddy, Makiko, di poter andare in terrazzo per fumare la sua solita sigaretta (fumava, nonostante la sua professione..). Il caso volle che il fumo andò a finire su un grosso nido di vespe. Ne risero e Roddy scrisse il tune "Smoking the Wasps" che introduce il suo CD "Good Drying".

John D. iniziò la sua straordinaria carriera di piper all'età di 4 anni. A 6 anni divenne l'allievo del leggendario P/M William Ross della Army School of Piping al castello di Edimburgo. All'età di 7 anni iniziò la sua carriera partecipando ai piping contest e all'età di 15 anni divenne il più giovane piper professionista che si ricordi. A 16 anni vinse la medaglia d'oro agli Argyllshire Gathering di Oban e al Northern Meeting di Inverness. Nel 1989 ricevette la MBE (Member of British Empire) per la sua fulgida carriera di piper.

John D. era un uomo semplice e schivo, dotato di un grandissimo senso dell'humour, non mancava mai di ammiccare a qualche bella signora presente ai suoi recitals. Di lui conservo un bellissimo LP in vinile, dove viene esaltata la sua bravura ed il suono particolarmente "delicato" della sua pipe. Non amava suonare ance troppo robuste perchè, diceva, in quel modo il suonatore era impegnato in una gara con i suoi polmoni e non a suonare bene il suo strumento. Ascoltate la sua bagpipe: è un "organo".

John D. è morto per le ferite riportate in un incidente d'auto nel giugno 2005. E' stato un esempio per tutti, di come si arriva ai vertici dell'arte del piping senza troppa pubblicità, ma con l'impegno e la passione di una vita. Ci mancherà molto.

Angus MacDonald (MBE)
(1938 - 1999)

Pipe Major Angus MacDonald MBE è deceduto nel giugno 1999 di cancro. E' stato il primo Principal Instructor del Piping Centre. Nato a Cardonald (Glasgow) e educato alla Queen Victoria School di Dunblane fu iniziato alla cornamusa dal Pipe Major George Sanderson.

Nel dicembre 1953 si arruolò come boy-soldier nella Scuola di Addestramento delle Scots Guards a Pibright, nel Surrey dove fu influenzato nell'apprendimento della cornamusa dai due fratelli Roe e da Alex MacDonald, piper della Regina. Fu promosso a Pipe Major nel 1965. Nel 1980 fu promosso a Warrant Officer Class One come Senior Instructor alla Army School of Piping al castello di Edimburgo. Lì divenne piper personale del Governatore al castello. Fu fatto inoltre Member of the British Empire (MBE). E' stato piper personale di Sua Maestà la Regina Elisabetta II. Si ritirò dal servizio militare attivo nel 1983.

Il suo record come piper nelle competizioni non è mai stato raggiunto da nessuno. Vinse tutte le maggiori competizioni incluse le Former Winners March, Strathspey and Reel a Oban, Inverness e Londra, La Clasp a Inverness, il Bratach Gorm, e il Glenfiddich Championship, alcune molte volte di seguito.

Il Piping Centre ha istituito il "Pipe Major Angus MacDonald Piping Scholarship" al fine di incoraggiare e assistere i giovani pipers nell'arte della cornamusa scozzese.

Angus MacDonald fu mio maestro nel 1983/84 a Londra alla Scottish Piping Society - Glazier Hall. Di lui ho un ricordo carissimo. Era un uomo eccezionale ed un maestro incredibile. Mi manca.

Donald MacPherson
(1922)

Donald MacPherson è nato a Glasgow nel 1922. Fu suo padre Iain MacPherson ad insegnargli a suonare la cornamusa. Suo padre era un ottimo e ben conosciuto piper, allievo del famoso John MacDougall Gillies.

Donald vinse fin dalla più giovane età moltissime competizioni amatoriali e continuò fino ad intraprendere al carriera professionale.

Per molti pipers l'Argyllshire Gathering in Oban e il Northern Meeting in Inverness sono considerate le gare più importanti. Nel 1948 Donald gareggiò per la prima volta all'Argyllshire e vinse la Gold Medal e  il Senior Piobaireachd nella stessa giornata e fu soltanto la seconda volta che ciò accadeva ad Oban. Nel 1954 la stessa "doppietta" si ripetè al Northern Meeting e fu la prima volta nella storia della competizione.

Donald vinse il Senior Piobaireachd a Oban ben quindici volte, di cui cinque e tre in successione. A Inverness vinse tre volte il Clasp e sei volte il Masters March, Strathspey & Reel. Questo medagliere non è ancora stato eguagliato..

Donald è famoso anche come compositore, docente e giudice, diventando una vera e propria figura leggendaria del piping internazionale.

Gordon Walker
(1967)

Gordon Walker was born on 13th December 1967 and raised in the royal Burgh of Old Cumnock in Ayrshire.. He was taught piping from the age of 4  by PM David Kay of Cumnock, an excellent teacher and piper himself.
In 1984 Gordon enlisted in the Royal Highland Fusiliers (Princess Margaret's Own Glasgow and Ayrshire Regiment) and started his training as a junior piper at Bridge of Don. He was a very successful competitor in Junior and Amateur solo piping competitions around Scotland and while training at Aberdeen, he won his first major piping competition and the same year his Silver Medal for Piobaireachd at The Argyllshire Gathering at Oban (the youngest ever at the age of 16)

After completing his training, Gordon was posted to the 1st Battalion in West Berlin in 1986. During steady progress through the piping ranks, Pipe Sergeant Walker was invited to attend the Pipe Major's Course at Edinburgh Castle under Major J M Allan and Major GNM Stoddart, BEM. Gordon achieving distinguished honours in both theoretical and practical piping.

Gordon Walker has continued to win many major accolades within the piping world  including:

Gavin Stoddart (MBE BEM)

In 1964 he became a guest piper with the Edinburgh City Police Pipe Band before enlisting as a piper in the Scots Guards in 1966 under Pipe Major Angus MacDonald. Gavin became Pipe Sergeant of the 1st Battalion and remained with the Scots Guards until May 1979 when he was approached to transfer to The Royal Highland Fusiliers as Pipe Major.
Gavin didn’t start professional competing until 1980 and had a short but very successful competing career winning the following major events:

• The Silver Medal for Piobaireachd at the Argyllshire Gathering
• The Silver Medal for Strathspeys and Reels at the Argyllshire Gathering
• Runner-up in the March, Strathspey and Reel competition at the Glenfiddich Championship
• The Gold Medal for Piobaireachd at the Argyllshire Gathering at his first attempt
• The Former Winners March, Strathspey and Reel at the Argyllshire Gathering at his first attempt
• The Gold Medal for Piobaireachd at the Braemar Highland Gathering
• The Gold Medal for Piobaireachd at the Northern Meetings
• The Former Winners March, Strathspey and Reel at the Argyllshire Gathering
• The Former Winners March, Strathspey and Reel at the Northern Meetings

Due to overseas postings in 1984 – 87 Gavin wasn’t able to compete as much as he would wish. He qualified for the Glenfiddich Piping Championship seven times, being placed first twice – in 1983 (winning both events) and in 1988. He was runner-up on three occasions and won the Piobaireachd Competition twice and the March, Strathspey and Reel three times.

In 1983 Gavin was awarded the BRITISH EMPIRE MEDAL for services to Army Piping and in May 1987 was posted to The Army School of Bagpipe Music, Edinburgh Castle as Warrant Officer Class 1 Pipe Major and appointed senior Pipe Major of The British Army.
Gavin retired from competing in 1989 and in 1990 was commissioned and appointed Director of Army Bagpipe Music. In September 1997 he was promoted Major and in 1999 all piping and drumming schools within the Army merged to form the Army School of Bagpipe Music and Highland Drumming under his command.
He was Invested as a MEMBER OF THE BRITISH EMPIRE in the 1999 Queen’s New Year’s Honours List for services to Army Piping and Drumming.
During his tenure as Director of Army Bagpipe Music he was responsible for the Massed Pipes and Drums at the Edinburgh Military Tattoo. One of Gavin’s last duties was to arrange the music and organise the Massed Pipes and Drums for the funeral of HM Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother.

Gavin retired from the Army in July 2003 after 37 years service and joined The National Piping Centre. He is a Senior Solo Adjudicator and is in great demand world-wide both as a judge and as an instructor.
